Antique “Tobacco Plant” Double-Barrel Hammer Shotgun – Schoolfield, Danville, Virginia This unusual antique side-by-side shotgun offers strong regional character and an interesting connection to the history of Southside Virginia. The lockplate is engraved “Tobacco Plant”, while a faint marking along the barrel rib identifies Schoolfield, Danville, Virginia. Schoolfield developed during the early 1900s as the company town associated with Dan River Mills. Located just outside Danville at the time, the community supported its own stores and mercantile businesses. “Tobacco Plant” was likely a trade or model name chosen for the Danville region, historically one of Virginia’s most important tobacco markets. Firearms of this period were frequently manufactured for regional hardware stores and merchants, which sold them under locally selected trade names. Features Antique external-hammer side-by-side shotgun Double triggers Top-opening lever Splinter-style forearm Decoratively engraved lockplates “Tobacco Plant” name engraved within a scroll-bordered banner Schoolfield and Danville, Virginia barrel-rib marking Condition The shotgun displays extensive age-related patina, oxidation, finish loss, handling wear and marks to the wood. One external hammer is broken, with its upper portion missing. Mechanical operation, chamber dimensions, barrel construction and firing condition have not been verified. This is an appealing candidate for a regional firearms collection, Danville or Schoolfield historical display, decorative collection, or restoration project. Its unusual “Tobacco Plant” trade name and local marking give it character beyond that of an ordinary antique hardware-store shotgun. IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTICE: Because of its age, condition and broken hammer, this firearm is being sold strictly as an antique collectible and gunsmith project. It should not be fired unless and until it has been thoroughly inspected and approved by a qualified gunsmith experienced with antique double-barrel shotguns. Please review all photographs carefully. Sold AS IS, WHERE IS, with no warranties or representations regarding mechanical operation, safety, originality, manufacturer attribution, or suitability for firing.
