1887 Morgan Silver Dollar NGC Certified MS64 • Toned • Older NGC Holder Offered in this lot is an 1887 Morgan silver dollar certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company as Mint State 64. The coin is housed in an older-generation NGC holder with certification number 251372-088. COIN DETAILS Date: 1887 Mint: Philadelphia Mintmark: None Denomination: One Dollar Series: Morgan Dollar Grade: NGC MS64 Certification Number: 251372-088 Composition: 90% Silver, 10% Copper Silver Content: Approximately 0.7734 Troy Ounce Designer: George T. Morgan Appearance and Condition The obverse displays pronounced brown and golden toning, with darker coloration across much of Liberty's portrait and brighter golden highlights toward the date and right side. The reverse remains considerably lighter, showing silver-gray surfaces with subtle golden coloration near portions of the border. The coin retains strong design detail and visible Mint State luster beneath the toning. Scattered contact marks are present consistent with the assigned MS64 grade. The older NGC holder shows the coin and certification label clearly and may provide additional interest to collectors who favor earlier-generation certified holders. Historical Background The Morgan dollar was introduced in 1878 and designed by Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan. Its obverse depicts Liberty in profile, while the reverse features a heraldic eagle surrounded by a wreath. The Philadelphia Mint produced 20,290,000 Morgan dollars in 1887, establishing a series production record that remained unbroken until 1921. Although the date is readily available, attractive certified Mint State examples remain popular with both Morgan dollar specialists and general collectors. A handsome certified Morgan dollar combining a desirable MS64 grade, distinctive two-sided toning and an older NGC holder.
