2020-(P) American Silver Eagle ANACS MS70 – Philadelphia Emergency Production Offered is a 2020-(P) American Silver Eagle attributed to the Philadelphia Mint’s limited Emergency Production Assistance run. The coin has been certified by ANACS as MS70 and carries the designation “A First Strike Coin.” This issue was produced in Philadelphia during the disruption of normal United States Mint operations in 2020. Only 240,000 Silver Eagles were struck during the Philadelphia production run, giving this issue a substantially smaller production total than the regular 2020 bullion issue. Coin Details Country: United States Date: 2020 Series: American Silver Eagle Denomination: One Dollar Mint Attribution: Philadelphia Mint Mintmark: None; designated “(P)” through production attribution Issue: Emergency Production Assistance Production Total: 240,000 coins Composition: .999 Fine Silver Silver Content: One Troy Ounce Grade: ANACS MS70 Label Designation: A First Strike Coin ANACS Certification Number: 0200838010106246 Obverse Designer: Adolph A. Weinman Reverse Designer: John M. Mercanti Appearance and Condition ANACS has assigned this coin the grade of MS70, the highest numerical grade on the 70-point grading scale. The coin displays brilliant silver-white surfaces, strong mint luster and sharply defined Walking Liberty and heraldic eagle designs. The coin remains sealed in its ANACS holder. The exterior of the holder exhibits visible handling marks, scattered spotting or residue and general surface wear. These observations concern the plastic holder and do not alter the MS70 grade assigned to the encapsulated coin. The coin and holder are included as offered. Historical Background In April 2020, interruptions at the West Point Mint created a need for emergency production assistance to maintain the supply of American Silver Eagle bullion coins. The Philadelphia Mint struck 240,000 Silver Eagles between April 8 and April 20, 2020. The coins were physically identical to other non-mintmarked bullion Silver Eagles, but their Philadelphia origin could be documented through the sealed and numbered Mint containers in which they were distributed. Because no “P” appears on the coin, grading services use the parenthetical designation “(P)” to indicate Philadelphia production without implying the presence of a physical mintmark. The obverse features Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty design, first introduced on the half dollar in 1916. The reverse features John Mercanti’s heraldic eagle, the original Silver Eagle reverse used from 1986 through 2020. This lot combines one troy ounce of fine silver, the highest ANACS numerical grade and documented association with the comparatively limited 2020 Philadelphia emergency-production run.
