2020-(S) American Silver Eagle ANACS MS70 – San Francisco Emergency Production Offered is a 2020-(S) American Silver Eagle attributed to the San Francisco Mint’s Emergency Production Assistance program. The coin has been certified by ANACS as MS70 and carries the designation “A First Strike Coin.” This issue was produced at the San Francisco Mint to supplement American Silver Eagle bullion production during the operational disruptions and unusually strong bullion demand of 2020. San Francisco produced approximately one million of these non-mintmarked Silver Eagles. Coin Details Country: United States Date: 2020 Series: American Silver Eagle Denomination: One Dollar Mint Attribution: San Francisco Mint Mintmark: None; designated “(S)” through production attribution Issue: Emergency Production Assistance San Francisco Production: Approximately 1,000,000 coins Composition: .999 Fine Silver Silver Content: One Troy Ounce Grade: ANACS MS70 Label Designation: A First Strike Coin ANACS Certification Number: 0200848010103017 Obverse Designer: Adolph A. Weinman Reverse Designer: John M. Mercanti Appearance and Condition ANACS has assigned this coin the grade of MS70, the highest numerical grade on the 70-point grading scale. The coin displays brilliant silver-white surfaces, strong mint luster and sharply defined design elements. The coin remains sealed in its ANACS holder. The exterior of the holder displays light surface marks, scuffing and scattered residue consistent with handling and storage. These observations concern the plastic holder and do not alter the MS70 grade assigned to the encapsulated coin. The coin and holder are included as offered. Historical Background The American Silver Eagle program was introduced in 1986. Although bullion Silver Eagles are most commonly associated with the West Point Mint, additional Mint facilities have periodically assisted with production when demand or operating conditions required additional capacity. During 2020, the United States Mint used the San Francisco facility to supplement Silver Eagle bullion production. Approximately one million coins were produced in this emergency run. Since the bullion coins were struck without mintmarks, their San Francisco origin was established through the identifying numbers on sealed 500-coin Mint containers. Grading services use the parenthetical designation “(S)” to identify the San Francisco attribution without implying that an “S” mintmark appears on the coin. This distinction separates the issue from proof Silver Eagles that carry a visible San Francisco mintmark. The obverse features Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty design, originally introduced on the half dollar in 1916. The reverse carries John Mercanti’s heraldic eagle, the original American Silver Eagle reverse used from 1986 through 2020. This lot combines one troy ounce of fine silver, the highest ANACS numerical grade and an identifiable connection to the unusual emergency-production circumstances of 2020.
